Dr. Matthew MacAulay is a Facial Transplant Surgeon at a prestigious New York hospital. His friend and mentor, Tom Grabowski, dies under mysterious circumstances. Matthew is forced to investigate. He uncovers his friend’s secret. A new technique that allows perfect facial transplants. No incisions, no scars. The surgeon is able to transplant one person’s face to another with the perfect result. Tom was able to accomplish this monumental feat with the help of Alice, a supercomputer robot with almost human abilities. While trying to find the people responsible for murdering his friend Tom, Matthew realizes he is the prime suspect. Matthew must flee for his life with the help of Dr. Sarah Larsson, a colleague and reluctant helper who has a secret of her own. Alice helps them make sense of a baffling series of seemingly unrelated events. Matthew is forced to undergo a facial transplant to hide his identity and help to uncover the truth. The clues carry Matthew and Sarah around the world. Matthew stumbles onto a sinister plot of monumental proportions, the real reason Tom was murdered. This discovery leads Matthew all the way to The White House with a dramatic conclusion. Matthew never wavers in his quest for the truth and perseveres against all the odds. He must race to stop a major catastrophe, ratcheting up the excitement until the thrilling conclusion. The Face Transplant is a powerful medical suspense thriller of the first order. The novel was written by a surgeon. The novel has a realism that only a surgeon can bring. The plot weaves politics, medicine and espionage into a tightly paced, intelligent thriller. The novel crescendos page by page to a totally unexpected conclusion.

Tragedy strikes the climbing team

They had already started sprinting to safety long before Larry’s command. Matthew looks at the white sheet moving towards him. He knows he will not make it. He keeps moving hoping he will not be buried. Matthew can see Sarah ahead of him, she is by far the fastest runner. He can see she will be well clear of the avalanche. As the snow closes in on him he can hear the noise. The slab of snow makes a deafeningly loud humming noise as it moves much closer. Matthew begins to change his course and move slightly downhill to see if he can outrun the snow.

When the snow hits him it is like a punch. The force of the snow knocks him off his feet. He tries to keep his hands in front of his face and stay upright. He does not lose consciousness. It happens in an instant. He is buried. He cannot see, but he is conscious. It is dark and it is silent. He is fully alert, his senses sharp. He can smell the snow. The snow has brought him to his knees. Control your breathing, he realizes he is hyperventilating. With great effort he lowers his hands to cover his mouth and nose. He is running out of air. Despite being under very white bright snow he cannot see, it is pitch black. Matthew feels himself fading to black. His hearing seems to decrease and then fade out. His mind seems to get more fuzzy and then fade out, then he just ceases.

  1. Thanks for hosting. The excerpt is great. Being buried under snow in an avalanche has to be one of the most terrifying experiences. I tried to capture the terror in this part of the book. The Face Transplant takes readers across many different continents in an epic race against time.

  6. I think it would be a harrowing experience to be trapped under snow. The irony is that the bright white snow would cover you and put you in total darkness. This is just one of the challenges the characters endure in The Face Transplant. They lurch from one desperate situation to the next.
